Harker Heights, Texas

With only two exits off of Highway 190 and nestled between Nolanville and Killeen, Harker Heights is a small community which shares much of its character, feel and even community services with neighboring Killeen, Texas. For instance, the school district is actually a part of the Killeen Independent School District (KISD). Harker Heights has grown over the years from a small suburb with a local HEB grocery store, to a well-developed, robust, yet still personable community which, but for roadsigns, is seamlessly integrated with Killeen, Texas.

Just a few years old, Harker Heights has a brand new huge outdoor shopping center which has the feel of an outlet mall, but hosts all sorts of well known retailers such as Dicks Sporting Goods, Barnes & Noble, Target, Cinemark Movie Theater and many others. Harker Heights is a part of restaurant row (an approximately 5-mile stretch of restaurants along the Central Texas Expressway /Highway 190). Although Harker Heights has a higher cost of living with median home prices being significantly higher than the rest of the Fort Hood Area, certain areas of Killeen, Copperas Cove, Belton and Temple, Texas also offer housing which demands just as high or even higer prices.

Harker Heights is the original home of the only regional airport. Although the original facility is still active, it now operates as a private airport (Skylark Field) with the regional airport having been moved to Killeen adjoining the well-known Gray Army Airfield. Skylark Field is adjacent to Stonetree Golf Course and less than 5 minutes from major shopping centers and hotels.
