Temple, Texas

With a short 25 minute trip to Fort Hood, Temple Texas is a good home choice for a military family that may want a little less of a military community feel. Many Temple, Texas residents work in Waco (a 40-minute drive) or Austin (a 1-hr drive). As the home of Mary Hardin-Baylor University, Temple also has the feel of a college town.

If you're a military veteran, regardless of where you live, you'll get to know Temple because it hosts the Central Texas Veterans Health System and Medical Center. The local Social Security Administration Office is also found in downtown Temple. The Temple mall has a new IMAX theater and has built up the mall, outlet and shopping centers along Highway 36 near the I-35 crossing.

Temple gets a little more rain than most of the Fort Hood area and is surrounded by farm and ranch land producing mostly corn and cattle. From its start, Temple has had a transportation heritage. It is home to the McLane company, the nation's largest convenience store supply distributor, and is also a major stop on the Amtrak rail system with destinations such as Chicago, Illinois, Palm Springs, California and more.
